Latest Troops To Be Deployed On Peacekeeping Duties With UN

Troops from 27 Regiment Logistic Corps are the latest to be deployed to Cyprus on peacekeeping duties with the United Nations.

The deployment comes after soldiers of the 4th Royal Artillery Regiment received their medals for their contribution in Operation TOSCA, the UK’s commitment to the UN peacekeeping force in the country, which has been policing the buffer-zone between Turkish and Greek Cypriot forces for over 50 years.

The UK currently have five military bases across Cyprus, with soldiers patrolling the Green Line that runs through the centre of Nicosia.

With over 1,000 military personnel, the majority British, the main role consists of ensuring the two opposing militants don’t encroach into the buffer zone.

Additionally, stopping other illegal activities, such as hunting.

After 45 years, buildings are beginning to turn into pieces of antiquated architecture in the buffer zone.

Until recently, British troops were housed at Ledra Palace, a hotel with a history of celebrity guests, such as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

As it stands, 600 British soldiers and police officers are currently deployed as peacekeepers.

Roughly 300 personnel are based in South Sudan, with the others in Cyprus.

It is said the deployment will likely pursue for a further couple of years.
